As you walk through its remarkably preserved streets, you’ll explore elegant homes, artisan workshops, theaters, bathhouses, and the gymnasium—each revealing the sophistication and ingenuity of Roman engineering. The artifacts uncovered over the centuries are exceptionally well preserved, while the dramatic plaster casts offer a moving glimpse into the final moments of the city’s inhabitants.
Herculaneum, named after the Greek hero Hercules, is even more exquisitely preserved. Its terracotta floors, vivid frescoes, and refined architectural details reflect the lifestyle of a wealthier community. The city was engulfed by ash, intense heat, and pyroclastic flows that sealed its beauty for nearly two millennia. Along the ancient shoreline, archaeologists discovered over 300 skeletons—silent witnesses to the desperate attempt to escape the eruption.
